What degree(s) are you pursuing? Medical Laboratory Technician AAS

Tell us about your prior experiences before arriving at LSC. Prior to attending Lake Superior College, I earned an AA degree in liberal arts from Northern Marianas College. I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field but wasn’t certain about which specific discipline. I worked in an optometrist’s office, as a dental assistant, and was even a special education paraprofessional in a middle school before I decided to focus my career course. After moving to Minnesota with my family, I started doing some research, learned there is demand for Medical Lab Technicians and decided to go for it. I took phlebotomy because students are encouraged to take phlebotomy first, to make sure they are really interested in the medical lab tech program.

Are you working while attending school? I was recommended by my phlebotomy professor to apply for a position as a phlebotomist at St. Luke’s. I was hired and have now been working there for a year and a half. I enjoy interacting with patients and love the challenge of a “difficult poke.”

Why did you choose LSC? I chose Lake Superior College because I heard great things about it, it is close to home, and I really wanted to go to a smaller school. Coming from a small island, I didn’t want to go to a larger university. The smaller class sizes and more personal instruction is what I was most drawn to. I have not been let down. LSC has been a very good fit for me.

How would you describe your LSC experience so far? My experience here at LSC has been great so far. The faculty and staff are great. They go above and beyond to ensure you are where you need to be and help you to meet your goals. Virginia Haynes, the MLT program director, has been so understanding, flexible, and helpful throughout the program.

Tell us about your experience in the program. What do you like best about the program? The phlebotomy program is great because it is attainable and a good start for anyone who wants to experience what it’s like to be in the medical field. It’s a perfect program for someone who wants to further her/his education as a nurse, doctor, or as a medical lab technician. As a parent with a young family, the MLT program has definitely been challenging, but also very rewarding. I look forward to continue to broaden my skillset in the MLT program and in the field.

Why should prospective students consider LSC? LSC is a great place to start with pre-requisites! It’s affordable, has great faculty and staff, and there are plenty of opportunities to start your future endeavors.
