Policy 4.6 - Criminal Background Checks
Part 1: Policy Statement
Lake Superior College (LSC) will conduct criminal background checks for positions as required by state and federal law. LSC may conduct criminal background checks on job candidates prior to an offer of employment, and, in certain cases, student worker applicants prior to making an offer of employment.
Information obtained from criminal background checks will be evaluated within the parameters of Minnesota Statutes, Chapter 364, Criminal Offenders, Rehabilitation, which outlines conditions under which persons with criminal convictions may be granted or denied employment.
Part 2: Objectives
It is the policy of LSC to provide employment opportunities to any qualified person. This includes encouraging and contributing to the rehabilitation of persons with criminal convictions and assisting them in the resumption of their responsibilities of citizenship. The College is also responsible for providing a safe environment for employees and customers and protecting and safeguarding the College’s financial, physical and intellectual assets. The goal of this policy is to provide a consistent approach to conducting criminal background checks on new employees and to comply with Minnesota Statutes, Chapter 364.
