Throw a bowl, feed a hungry human. Students with Lake Superior College’s Art Club and area artists will use their creativity to fight hunger throughout the region during an upcoming Throw-a-thon Dec.1-2.
This activity will support Duluth’s “Empty Bowl” project, an annual event held every spring to raise money for Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank.
The 18th annual Lake Superior College Throw-a-thon will take place from
9 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Friday, December 1 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, December 2. Held in the ceramics studio in LSC’s Fine Arts building, the event attracts dozens of students and some of the region’s most accomplished artists to throw ceramic bowls for the Empty Bowl.
“Everyone is welcome to come join us, students or otherwise. This is a great opportunity to volunteer a bit of your time and give back to your community,” said Isi Grauer, president of the LSC Student Art Club. “We always have a good time and meet interesting people. Refreshments are provided.”
College officials estimate that the Throw-a-thon has produced more than $155,000 worth of bowls for the Empty Bowl over the last 17 years.
“The LSC Art Club does the organizing to supply the materials and studio space and invites area potters, students, and professionals to bring their skills, dedication, and creativity,” said Cody Olander, LSC art faculty member and club adviser. “Last year, we made 230 bowls. This year, we are setting a goal to make 250 or more bowls.”
The completed works of art will be available at the Duluth Depot on April 16, 2018, starting with the “Sea of Bowls” preview auction event featuring regional artist bowls, and the “Empty Bowl” main event on April 17, 2018. The bowls will be offered along with a variety of delicious soups and breads that have been donated by area restaurants.
Area artists and community members are encouraged to participate. For more information, contact Cody Olander at [email protected].
