Lake Superior College to Discontinue Intercollegiate Athletics following 2024-25 Academic Year

Lake Superior College will discontinue its intercollegiate athletics programs, which includes Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Co-ed Clay Target teams at the end of the 2025 spring semester.

The college performed a thorough review of its athletics programs, which included finances staffing, and facilities. School leadership also consulted with Minnesota State Chancellor Scott Olson before making the difficult decision.

“We know this decision impacts many in our community, especially our student-athletes, coaches, and supporters who have dedicated so much to LSC athletics over the past decade,” said Dr. Patricia Rogers, President of Lake Superior College. “This decision is not a reflection of the hard work or passion our staff or our alumni have put into our programs.

LSC joined the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III in the fall of 2014 and then established men’s and women’s soccer programs in the fall of 2015. Lake Superior College later added Cycling (Mountain Biking) and Clay Target in 2017. Men’s and Women’s Basketball was added in 2018 and played two seasons before the COVID-19 pandemic.

“While this decision marks the end of an era for LSC Athletics, we will continue to provide opportunities for students to engage in recreational and intramural activities while focusing on our core mission of delivering high-quality, affordable education,” said President Rogers.

We extend our deepest gratitude to our student-athletes, coaches, and supporters who have contributed to IceHawk Athletics.
