Lake Superior College Foundation to Award over $100,000 in Student Scholarships, Applications Accepted through March 22
The Lake Superior College Foundation is awarding over $100,000 in student scholarships this spring semester for students at Lake Superior College. The annual LSC Foundation scholarship application window has been open for the past month and will now be extended one additional week, through March 22. Current and prospective LSC students are encouraged to apply by visiting www.lsc.edu/foundation. The entire application process is online and requires applicants to set up an account in the AwardSpring system. Foundation scholarships are available to current (returning) and incoming students in good standing, and will be awarded to students enrolled at LSC in Fall Semester 2021.
There are several program-specific scholarships as well as dozens of general scholarships open to all current and incoming students. Scholarship amounts range from $500 to $2,500. Any student who plans on attending classes at LSC in the fall of 2021 is eligible to apply, although some scholarships do have specific requirements based on conditions established by the funders of the scholarship.
In addition to the traditional scholarships for current and incoming students, Lake Superior College Foundation is once again offering several scholarships specifically for graduating high school seniors in the region who plan to attend Lake Superior College in the fall. These high school specific scholarships are $2,000 each, which will be split into two $1,000 awards applied in the Fall of 2021 and again in the Spring of 2022, and can be adjusted for programs that can be completed in less than a year. High school seniors do not need to be accepted at Lake Superior College yet in order to be eligible to apply, however the scholarships will only be awarded to Lake Superior College students in good standing once fall semester is underway. Awards are typically applied to student accounts after the final day to add/drop classes.
LSC Foundation will also once again be offering up to thirteen St. Louis County Mineral Royalties Scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each. This funding is made possible thanks to the generous support and approval of the St. Louis County Board of Commissioners. The Foundation is offering a few new scholarships this year including the Nicholas James Person RN Nursing Scholarship, which is a $2,000 award for returning students in LSC’s nursing program. While the LSC Foundation awards scholarships throughout the year, this spring application window is the largest annual one-time application and distribution of funds. These awards come at an opportune time as Lake Superior College is experiencing an increase in the amount of students seeking additional financial support.
“The pandemic has caused a lot of financial hardship and uncertainty, so we’re trying to provide some hope” said Daniel Fanning, Vice President of Institutional Advancement at Lake Superior College. “We hope that by providing these scholarships, we’re able to encourage students to attend and/or remain in school. Lake Superior College offers the 3rd lowest tuition in the State of Minnesota, yet we know that many students are still struggling to find the financial resources for college. We are working to try to help remove those financial barriers so more students can take advantage of the quality programs at LSC, and not fall behind in their studies. Thanks to the generosity of our community and industry partners, we are thrilled to be able to offer these scholarship opportunities. We are grateful for the strong support from our expanding donor which is willing to invest in our students because they realize LSC graduates are the future workforce and future leaders of our region. The application process is intentionally pretty simple, as we encourage anyone who is planning on, or at least even considering, attending LSC in the fall to apply. We’re extended the deadline one week because we have heard from several current high school seniors, and their guidance counselors, who haven’t had much time to work on applications due to the fact that some high school haven’t been in school much, if at all this year. By extending the deadline a week, we hope this gives them an opportunity to complete the applications and ask any questions they may have. We know it’s been a very unique year for high school seniors, and we want to work with them to help support their success.”
The LSC Foundation Scholarship Review Committee, largely made up of volunteer members of the LSC Board of Directors, will review applications after the application window closes. The final list of recommended scholarship recipients will be presented to the full LSC Foundation Board of Directors for approval. All scholarship recipients will be notified in April, primarily through the AwardSpring dashboard as well as through email. In an additional step to remove financial barriers, Lake Superior College has waived the application fee. Prospective students are encouraged to apply, for free, at www.lsc.edu/apply.
