Computer Requirements for CIS Courses

On-campus students and online students who can come to the CIS labs don’t need a computer at all. The computers in the labs are sufficient to complete all homework. However, a USB storage device (flash drive) with a minimum of 128GB is recommended for saving work.

Students who need or wish to do homework on their own personal computers should consider the following:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Windows operating system (Windows 10)
  • 1.2 GHz or faster multi-core processor
  • 16 GB RAM
  • 200 GB available disk space

Recommended Specifications:

  • Windows 10 64-bit
  • 1.2 GHz multi-core processor
  • 32 GB RAM
  • 250 GB available disk space on a Solid State Drive (SSD)
  • Support for virtualization extensions (AMD-V or Intel VT-X) in the BIOS/UEFI
  • SLAT – Second-Level Address Translation

Macintosh users have been able to complete this course successfully using a Mac. The course is taught in a Windows environment, and support for the Mac OS is not provided. However, students who are willing to learn how to accomplish the course work on a Mac are welcome to do this. The Mac can dual boot to Windows using Boot Camp, and the Mac can run Windows in a virtual machine using VMware Fusion.
